The design responds to these difficult conditions by creating a barrier wall protecting the building and the site from this hostile acoustic environment. Furthermore, in a revolutionary concept for a school building in that the study areas are arranged as separate ‘terraced houses’ with a common ‘cloister’ at the ground level. All classrooms are equal in their orientation to Hackney Downs. Vertical circulation within each ‘house’ is arranged in the open atria located between the barrier wall and the classrooms.
