The two most distinctive characteristics of the Great Fen in Cambridgeshire – the site for this competition – are the flatness of the natural fenland landscape and the unusual perception of the vastness of the sky above. The new visitors’ centre responds to this conceptually by taking a shape of a pier – a lightweight structure elevated above the landscape, allowing it to flow freely underneath; with a special destination at its end – a unique structure called the ‘Skycatcher’.
